I belive this game was made around 1995. Around this time, the PlayStation had just been made and the market was flooded with Street Fighter 2 clones. The clones came in many forms, but the most common were the 3-frames-of-animation-attacks Neo Geo games and 2-frames-of-animation-attacks SNES games. They featured a couple of fighters in a modern day setting beating each other up with moves ripped directly from Street Fighter 2. They even had the 2 main clone rival characters complete with a fireball and dragon punch. Sometime along the way, someone said "HEY! Let's make a Street Fighter clone…IN SPACE!" and another guy replied with "DUDE! SPACE IS COOL!" and so the crappy space fighter was born. Characters got cheesier and gameplay somehow got crappier. And in space, no one can hear you scream! If you don't belive me, check out Cosmic Carnage on 32X (although I enjoyed all 1.5 rounds of it I played before my 32X locked up, as usual). Well, Sunsoft liked the idea of a space fighter as much as anyone else and they "Galaxy Fight: The Universal Warriors". While not obvious at first, the subtitle is what really makes you go "OH GOD! NOT A STREET FIGHTER CLONE!". Think about it, SF2's full name is "Street Fighter 2: The World Warriors" and featured 8 world warriors…Galaxy Fight has 8 UNIVERSAL warriors…yeah. Sadly, they even have the same number of bosses, 4! However, Galaxy Fight was one of the first games to feature a "TRUE" boss that you get to fight only if you don't lose a round. What sets Galaxy Fight apart from the rest of the crappy space fighters is that it's not quite as crappy, and it looks damn good! Even by todays standards! The characters animate beautifully, almost as good as the ones in Street Fighter 3! And the backgrounds are gorgeous and full of cheesy special effects. Most of these effects don't emulate very well though, so most of you can't appreciate the parralax purple dust on Alvaan's stage or the sheer amazing-ness of the reflection and water splashes of Gunther's stage, or the just plain wackyness of Roomi's stage. Also unique is many of the characters. Rolf and his rival Kazuma are COMPLETELY DIFFERENT!!! Gunther is the coolest Lizard man ever, although he reminds me of Clark from KOF. And then there's Roomi. Who DOESN'T like Roomi! At first glance, she's just some sort of busty elf girl in tight pants and puffy gloves, but then you realize that she's actually quite alien. Look at her legs! But even with her weird alien-ness, she still manages to be cute as all hell! Winning the award for the world's cutest alien! Yes, don't forget that Galaxy Fight takes place in SPACE! You're fighting ALIENS! And many of them were pulled off well, although some are way too human. While space is neat and all, Galaxy fight has a few things unique to it. First, no clearly labled buttons, they are just weak, medium, and strong, no punch or kick. And second, NO BOUNDARIES! Apparently someone at Sunsoft hated corner traps and tried to eliminate them! Intresting indeed. Overall, for the time frame before Super Bars, this game was pretty good. Nowadays it's more of a novelty than a good game, but hey! It's still fun! Oh, and I HIGHLY recommend the Saturn version so that you can see the special effects and assign moves to buttons so you can actually BEAT the dang thing!
